The Lakes Region Sail and Power Squadron, with Wild Meadow Canoes and Kayaks, will be holding an “Operation Paddle Smart” program, open to all, as part of their Spring Meeting. It is not the public boating course required by New Hampshire, but will focus on the escalating sports of Canoeing, Kayaking, and Stand Up Paddling with an emphasis on safe paddling practices for kayakers. According to Coast Guard and CDC statistics, more than 100 paddlers each year lose their lives in drowning accidents across the country. Here in the middle of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, where we are surrounded by water, we would like to help reduce these statistics. Using the U.S. Power Squadron’s “Paddle Smart” program, we will be discussing everything from how to choose a life jacket, to what to wear, to what safety equipment you need, to where you can go.

The first hour is geared toward beginners, followed by information for those with more experience. While we will touch on ocean and tidal paddling and its many safety concerns, our emphasis will be on recreational paddling on the lakes, ponds, and the slow rivers around us.

Time: 9-10:30 am Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Location: Wolfeboro Inn, Wolfeboro, NH

Stand up paddling is here on Lake Winnipesaukee. It’s a fun exercise with aerobic benefits and the safety feature of increased visibility.

For flat water paddling, The SUP board should have a bow shape to displace water. Displacement hulls give you straight tracking for easier balance and control.

This sport does require serious balance, but anyone can do it. Starting slowly, you shift your weight from your knees to your feet. Stand Up Paddling is a five step process, but with a little practice you can quickly go from beginner to confident SUPper!

To avoid misspending your money, try before you buy. A kayak shop with a shallow, sandy demo area is ideal for practicing and developing your SUP skills.

Wild Meadow in Winnipesaukee has all the essentials you will want and need to learn and grow in the newest experience on the water!
